Design
Whether you plan to build your pond yourself, or hire a professional to install it, its imperative that you not leave the design of your waterscape to chance. A well designed pond or waterfall will cost close to the same as a spa, so its important for you to protect your investment by consulting with a good designer first.
Before we can set about designing your waterscape, first we’ll need to determine your expectations.
- Do you want a koi pond or a water garden?
- Or would you prefer a pondless waterfall system?
- Or would you like a combination of the above?
Here are some further issues for your consideration:
- Will you be able to appreciate your waterscape from your most frequented rooms in your home, or from your deck or patio area?
- Is there access to a hose or local water supply close to your pond area?
- Do you need to install a pond-side electrical source, or do you have an electrical source already?
- If you want fish, how many fish will your pond support?
- What kind of maintenance is required?
- What kind of plants do you want?
- How much water will be required to keep your waterscape healthy?
- What about water overflow from a heavy rain?
- Is there separate drainage required?
- What happens in the winter?
- Should my waterscape be in the sun or shade?
- Is the waterscape pet-friendly?
- What effect will this installation have on the value of my home?
Construction:
Now that you’ve determined the exact waterscape that is best for your home, you have the option to build it yourself, or hire a professional. Since creating your water project is the same thing as creating an entirely new ecological environment, it is important that your waterscape be constructed correctly. As we stated in the design section, this project will cost you close to what a spa or hot tub will cost, and therefore it’s important that you try not to cut corners. Remember that a well constructed waterscape will add considerable value to your home, and therefore you should plan its construction with care.
- Make sure the pond is well positioned on your property.
- Make sure the drainage is well designed.
- Make sure you have adequate pumps and filters.
- Make sure your lighting is well positioned.
- Make sure the flora is chosen to support the environment as well as contribute to the beauty of this project.
- Make sure the maintenance is built in and easy.
- Make sure the materials used are natural and plentiful.
- Make sure there is no leakage to prevent algae build up and unnecessary water usage.
Our professional installation and construction of your waterscape will assure that your landscape is beautifully converted to your own personal paradise for you and your family to enjoy for many years to come!
Maintenance
If constructed properly, your waterscape will have built in “cleaning
helpers” that will consistently assure that your koi pond, water
garden or waterfall functions as a bio diverse entity.
Maintenance can be as little as a once a week debris removal consisting of you removing a sack of discarded debris, collected by the system.
As the water temperature drops in the fall, it will be necessary to stop feeding your fish (if you do) as the temperature slips below 45º. Some plants will need to be sunk to a deeper level and as the season approaches the first frost, your system will be shut down and replaced with a spot heater to make sure there is not a freeze over (in the case of a koi pond). It is imperative that a hole remains in the pond and that it does not freeze in order to allow gases to escape.
If you prefer to include seasonal waterscape maintenance with your overall landscape maintenance, this can easily be accomplished. We are happy to accommodate your needs.
